No to amnesty for Boko Haram - rights advocate

File: AFPThe Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has rejected reported plans by the government to grant amnesty to Boko Haram terrorists.
The organisation also decried the lack of progress in the prosecution of the perpetrators of the terror.
Officials from HURIWA pointed out one year after the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, said it was “embarrassing” the government had chosen to grant softlanding to “mass murderers” than deploy the apparatus of effective prosecution.

“Justice is a three way traffic which embodies the interest of both the victim of crime, that of the State and then the person in conflict with the law,” HURIWA National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, and the National Media Affairs Director, Zainab Yusuf, jointly stated.

“We wonder why the Nigerian State through the Defence Headquarters has turned logic on its head by promoting the interest of the terrorists without any regard and respect for the thousands of the victims of the atrocities committed by these terrorists of Boko Haram.”
HURIWA’s concerns come on the back of statements attributed to Defence Information, Defence Headquarters, Brig.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, suggesting the military would rehabilitate repentant Boko Haram members through its “Operations Safe Corridor.”
He was quoted as saying the operation was to rehabilitate, reintegrate, empower and de-radicalise surrendered members of the sect.
According to HURIWA, Boko Haram terrorists have killed over 25 000 people.
