Since Jega’ s departure in June, the aspirants have stepped up their campaigns to occupy the position.
Some of those being speculated to succeed Jega are the acting Chairman of the commission, Amina Zakari;, two former National Commissioners (Lai Olurode and Nuru Yakubu); the Director-General of INEC Electoral Institute, Prof. Abubakar Momoh; Festus Okoye ( a human rights activist); Mike Igini.
A retired Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Muhammadu Uwais, who was the chairman of an Electoral Reform Committee raised by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, has been suggested for the job, but there is a snag: his age.
President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to discuss his nominees for the position.
The Nigerian Army has said that members of the public who are interested in getting enlisted into the service must part with N2,500 to participate in the recruitment exercise.
The Army Headquarters, through the office of the Army Secretary, noted that eligible Nigerians who fail to pay the recruitment fee would be denied access to the electronic application portal designed for the exercise.
The army authorities said First Bank of Nigeria branches nationwide would receive the recruitment fees on behalf of the service, from applicants who would then get a scratch card that will enable them to gain access to the online application portal.
The military service is recruiting officers into its Direct and Short Service Combatant Commission, Corps of Supply and Transport and Army Medical Corps, some of whom would be deployed in the North-East to take part in the ongoing campaign against the Boko Haram insurgents in the region.
"Applications are to be made online. The following will apply: Obtain a PayChoice PIN Code from any branch of First Bank nationwide upon the payment of N2, 500 application fee to the designated cashier with effect from May 14, 2014.
"Applicants are to complete the form online and upload all required documents stated in the general instructions. Applicants must print out their online-generated photo-card on completion of their application. Successful applicants are required to present their printed photo-cards to the selection board during the interview," the Nigerian Army stated on its website, nigerianarmyms.org.

Jonathan’s visit: Fayose accuses Fayemi of threatening monarchs

Fayose and Fayemi
Peoples
Democratic Party governorship candidate in Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele
Fayose, has accused Governor Kayode Fayemi of directing traditional
rulers in the State not to receive President Goodluck Jonathan.
Jonathan is scheduled to pay a two-day
visit to the state during which he will officially present Fayose as the
candidate of the party.
A statement by the Director-General, Ayo
Fayose Campaign Organisation, Chief Dipo Anisulowo, stated that, “Fayemi
sent a text message to the Onitaji of Itaji-Ekiti (Oba Adamo Babalola)
that the obas must not receive President Jonathan.”
Fayose alleged that Fayemi, who is the
All Progressives Congress candidate in the June 21 election, in the
message to the Onitaji, who is the Chairman, Ekiti State Council of
Obas, directed him (Onitaji) to make sure that first class obas in the
state did not attend the reception scheduled for the palace of the Ewi
of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe.
But in a reaction, Oba Babalola, who said
the Council of Obas, does not take directives from political parties,
said Jonathan was not scheduled to meet them.
He said, “As far as I am concerned, when I
got the information from them (PDP), I sent the information round to
all obas. We had a similar issue during Obasanjo’s regime and since then
we obas in Ekiti State resolved not to meet any president in any oba’s
palace except in the palace of the Chairman, Council of Obas.
“I am not a member of any political
party, if there is a message from the Presidency for all obas then I am
oblige to obey but not from any political party at all.
“I learnt he is not coming to pay courtesy visit to us (council). He is coming for a political rally. So we are not involved.”
The Chief Press Secretary to Fayemi,
Yinka Oyebode, debunked the allegation, saying “Fayose ran a discredited
government, he is now running a discredited campaign.”
There are plans to bring down my government' - President Jonathan
Speaking during the 2014 Democracy Day
Interdenominational Church Service in Abuja yesterday Sunday May 25th,
president Jonathan said there are evil people that are trying to bring
down his government and they are the ones behind the violence in
Nigeria, Punch reports.
"You can imagine if this government had not been facing these distractions within this period, definitely, we would have moved farther than this. All these distractions are planned to bring this government down and since they failed, terror will also fail.
“We have been witnessing terror attacks for two years plus, but the Chibok incident has added a major dent on the security of the country. There is nothing God cannot do. With your prayers, our girls will be seen by our security personnel. Terror will not stop this country from progressing. We know that these terrorists are human and they are evil men. Definitely, they are among those we categorise as evil forces.
Forces of evil will never prevail. Forces of darkness will never prevail. I call on all Nigerians, Christians and non-Christians who pray, to continue to pray and I believe that God is on our side. Forces of evil and darkness will never prevail.” the president said
