Brazil 2014: Cameroon battles Croatia for survival in Amazon forest

The Cameroonians who lost their opening game with Mexico are at great risk of another first round exit should they lose today to another exit- threatened Croatia. This is a match of great significance to the Africans who have never beaten any European side since their Cinderella performance at Italia ‘90.
For Croatia, which had splendid performance at France ‘98, where the side made a World Cup debut and beat great opponents like Germany and the Netherlands to reach the semi finals and eventually placing third, this is their first ever encounter with an African opposition in the World Cup.
Both Cameroon and Croatia have therefore never met before. Cameroon’s last World Cup victory over a European side dated back to 1990, when they beat Romania 2-1.
That remained the Lions’ only success against teams from the Old Continent. In all, the Africans had lost seven and drawn five of their 13 duels against UEFA teams.
The Cameroonians, once the beacon of African football had lost their last five World Cup matches. This is negative African record that they hold.
The competition’s all-time longest losing streak of nine games was set by Mexico between the 1930 and 1958 editions.
Croatia had gone five matches without a win in the World Cup, having lost three and drawn two since defeating Italy in 2002.
For Cameroon’s German coach, Volker Finke, his talisman remains the aging Samuel Eto’o. “He remains a match-winning performer”, remarked the coach. But there are speculations within the Cameroon camp that most other players were at loggerheads with Eto’o.
The coach insisted that the conflict was over and that will not be in their minds as they file out against Croatia at the Arena Amazonia, Manaus in the famous Amazonia rain forest, the largest in the world.
As for Croatia, their morale had received a boost, following the return of Bayern Munich’s Mario Mandzukic, who missed the opener with Brazil, serving a match ban as a result of being sent off in their last World Cup qualifier against Iceland.
…As Spain faces Chile for self esteem
No previous world champions had been humiliated the way Spain suffered against the Netherlands last Friday. The current World Cup holders will have to prove their worth as they file out against Chile tonight at the famous Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. The world champions, Spain, largely dominated the sides’ 10th previous meetings, winning eight and drawing the other two. The last encounter, a friendly played out in Geneva on September 10, 2013, ended in a 2-2 draw. The goals were scored by Roberto Soldado and Jesus Navas for Spain, plus a double from Chile’s Edu Vargas. Brazil hosted the teams’ maiden meeting in the 1950 World Cup, when goals from Estanislao Basora and Zarra helped Spain secure a 2-0 victory at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
The pair’s second World Cup showdown came four years ago in South Africa and ended 2-1, with goals from Spaniards David Villa and Andres Iniesta, as well as Chile’s Rodrigo Millar.
This is the third time in nine participations that Chile have faced the defending champions. Both previous occasions were won by the holders, namely Brazil who triumphed 4-2 in 1962 and 4-1 in 1998.
Spain’s 5-1 loss to the Netherlands was the heaviest defeat recorded by a defending champion at the World Cup.
If Iker Casillas features in this game, which would be his 17th in the World Cup, he will edge ahead of Andoni Zubizarreta to set a new Spanish appearance record in the competition.
With his goal against Australia, Jean Beausejour became the first Chilean to score in two World Cups, having already struck against Honduras in 2010.
This will be the second match that Mark Geiger has refereed at this edition and puts him joint-top of the tournament appearance table for US referees, alongside Esse Baharmast (1998), Brian Hall (2002) and David Socha (1982-1986).
Netherlands set to confirm Australia’s imminent exit
The huge joke in Brazil is that the Australians were the  first among the 31 visiting competing teams to arrive and that they may just be the first to leave. A defeat tonight in the match with the flaming “Oranges” of the Netherlands will confirm the assertion.Australia lost their opening match 3-1 to Chile, while theNetherlands won 5-1 against stiffer oppositions, Spain. Despite the current form of the Dutch, it is an irony that the Netherlands are yet to beat Australia, following three previous encounters, all of which were friendly games played between 2006 and 2009. Australia have the edge in the overall series, with one win and two draws.
Australia were guided by a Dutch coach in their last two World Cup campaigns, namely Guus Hiddink in 2006 and Pim Verbeek in 2010.

Nigeria: Iranian Coach Mocks Keshi, Eagles

Before the game, veteran coach Carlos Queiroz said that Iran would use the match against Super Eagles to send a message to the World on Iranian football.
And moments after the barren draw, Queiroz mocked Stephen Keshi that he has no player who plays in Chelsea, CSKA or Liverpool noting that Iranian players played with concentration, love for their country and good attitude.
"We remain one nation that came to the World Cup without the conditions of others. We have no big names in big clubs but we play with determination, concentration and good attitude", he said at the post match conference.
He said that he was satisfied with his team's performance against African Champions Nigeria and a team that is loaded with big names playing in big clubs.
"I am happy with the players especially my defence line. I know that many people are not happy because they are used to seeing many goals. But for us in Iran, it is better to go home happy with one point obtained from African champions that are blessed with players in the best clubs. But one thing I assure you is that in eight years time, Iranian football will not be the same again.
I don't want to think about the next two games involving Iran and Argentina and Bosnia. Let me savour this point. Step by step, I will come up with strategies on how to handle them. For now, we are happy. We are fulfilled", Queiroz said.
Nigeria: Bosnia, Argentina Beatable - Keshi
Still smarting from the barren draw with Iran, Super Eagles Coach Stephen Kesh has waived off the challenges of Bosnia and Argentina saying that they are not unbeatable just as he said that he was not God to guarantee victory against the two remaining crack teams in Group F.
"Lets not give up hope. We all saw what happened in the match between Holland and Spain. Nobody expected that to happen. We also saw what happened between Germany and Portugal. That is football for you.
Anything can happen, so let us not rule out the possibility of beating Bosnia and Argentina and progress to the second round", he preached.
But a question on whether he could give assurance of victory against Bosnia and Argentina got him on the wrong side as he flared up. "I'm not God. I can't give anybody any assurance. Even the best coaches in the world can't give assurance on any match. What I will do is to go back and prepare the team hoping that they play better than what they played today.
The Iranians were hard and prepared for us. You guys are making me to sound like a broken record. We didn't win today and that is not the end of the world. There are still other games to play", Keshi scoffed.

Keshi: The boys were nervous

Abuja - Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi was critical of his side's "nervous" display as they started their World Cup campaign with a goalless draw against Iran.

The African champions dominated the play on Monday night but were unable to extract maximum reward from the Group F fixture.

Keshi's men next face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday."The boys were too nervous and unsettled," he told Optima Live. "You don't do that at this stage."It happens in football. We really didn't perform as expected but we have to move on."I wanted a win but must take a draw. We must do better to get a win against Bosnia."

Shocking News: We Didn’t Play Well Against Iran Because Of Osaze – Keshi

Super Eagles Striker, Osaze Odemwingie
Super Eagles Striker, Osaze Odemwingie
Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has given several explanations on why the Super Eagles failed to beat the Iranians in their Group F World Cup match played in Curitiba, Brazil on Monday. The Nigerian team which featured professionals from the European leagues were highly tipped to beat the Iranians that paraded mainly amateur players from their domestic league. Ashkan Dejakah of Fulham is Iran’s biggest star in Brazil. Keshi told the international media after the game that a few things didn’t follow the script including Osaze Odemwingie’s contribution to the match that ended goalless. The coach lamented that the Stoke City striker failed to play to instruction and that caused the Eagles setback. He said, “The Osaze you are talking about didn’t do well. Osaze did not play to instructions and that affected the team.”
Keshi was responding to questions to his tactical formation and why he waited until late into the game before introducing the striker. The popular opinion amongst the fans and media at the stadium in Brazil was that Osaze made a lot of difference when he got on the field and indeed had the only meaningful shot at goal against the Iranians.
A former captain of the Eagles Austin Okocha was one of those who were critical of Keshi’s approach to the game. He told the BBC the team needed creative players in that encounter. He said, “This was a must-win for Nigeria but we did not take it. We did not do enough, we were poor. Keshi did not do enough work on the team. The tactical play was so bad, I hold Keshi responsible for this. “Osaze (Odemwingie) was more creative when he came in, and we needed more in this game.”
Osaze who was one of the only four players who had been to the World Cup in the Nigerian squad was a 69th minute replacement for Ramon Azeez. Keshi said though the defensive stand of the Iranian affected his team, he was firm and right with his starting 11 and the substitutions he made in the game.
The media has also criticised the Nigerian coach for leaving out Ike Uche who was the most prolific Nigerian striker in the last season. Nigeria will play their second Brazil 2014 match on Saturday against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Cuiaba city. The Bosnians lost their opening game to group leaders Argentina.

LAGOS At least one person drowned and nine others rescued as a passenger boat capsized in Lagos.
Boat-capsize-500x300
This came barely a month after a passenger boat capsized under Bonny Camp bridge, Victoria Island axis of the state on May 18, killing one of the nine passengers on board.
Vanguard gathered that the Coconut Island-bound boat capsized at about 4:00 pm on Monday between Ojo and Tin Can Island, Apapa Local Government Area.
An eyewitness explained that all passengers on board the ill‑fated boat wore life jackets. But immediately the boat capsized, one of the passengers, a male, drowned and his life jacket immediately floated.
He noted that they could not determine the cause of the incident, saying the boat was certified okay before leaving Tin Can shores.
It would be recalled that the state government, few months ago, received the report of the committee to investigate causes of boat mishap on the state waterways.
Confirming the mishap, Information Officer of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, said the identity of the missing person was yet to be known, adding: “The body of the missing person is yet to be recovered. But I can assure you that we are still searching for it.”
On the cause of the mishap, Farinloye explained: “From my interview with the survivors, waves from four bigger boats that passed beside the boat at that time caused it to lose balance, and the passengers began to panic. This further caused the boat to capsize.”
