lNational Chairman may emerge in August
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, governors, immediate past Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Tony Anenih as well as former President of the Senate, David Mark, were absent at yesterday’s BoT of the party. Also absent were former Vice-President Namadi Sambo and ex-Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha.
No reason was given for their absence. Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, and Governor Ibrahim Dankwanbo, however, attended the meeting. The meeting, which was the first to be held since PDP became an opposition party, was the first to be hosted outside the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The meeting took place at Wadata Plaza, the party’s National Secretariat. The Secretary of the board, Senator Walid Jibrin, who spoke at the end of the meeting, called on members of the party to remain calm, assuring that PDP would soon come back to life again.
“We are calling on all our members to remain calm and should not be disturbed. We are doing all our best to ensure sanity is brought to our party. Our party is going to pick up again,” he said. Jibrin noted that party leaders need some time to bring back PDP to prominence. “The BoT is up to the task of providing guidance not only to the executive of the party but to members of the National Assembly.
That is why we have involved ourselves very much in the collaboration with the National Working Committee (NWC) to ensure that there is synergy with the National Assembly,” he added. The BoT Secretary, who is also Secretary of the Post-Election Review Committee headed by Ekweremadu, said the committee was very careful in handling the issues that led to the loss of the PDP at the general elections. He said the committee has come up with a roadmap and has invited memoranda from members of the party on how to move forward.
The committee was given three weeks to complete its assignment. But Jibrin said they have sought for a four-week extension, which has been granted. He said the party’s Deputy National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, will act as national chairman for three months according to the party’s constitution before a new chairman will be elected probably in August.
“The appointment of the Acting Chairman is for three months and after three months, we will sit again, because by our constitution, the BoT regulates its own activities. We will regulate our own activities when the time comes,” he said. Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu resigned in May as PDP National Chairman. Acting BoT Chairman, Dr. Mohammed Bello, said the party will provide credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
