Unpaid salaries pose security threat to Nigeria’
 FEMI MAKINDE

Salary negotiation
A security expert, Mr. Jackson Olalekan-Ojo, has said that the non-payment of workers’ salaries in 11 states of the federation poses a grave danger to the peace being enjoyed in the country.

Olalekan-Ojo said this in an interview with our correspondent in Osogbo on Thursday.

He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the crisis by granting the affected states soft loans which would be repaid back within four to six years.

He said, “The governors of the affected states need prayers now. I know that they are under pressure, but I think the President should help the affected states.

“He should give them some funds to pay their workers but he must ensure that the money is used for that purpose only. Also, the money should be repaid, but the repayment should be spread to make them pay back between four and six years.

“This should be done because if crisis should erupt in about 11 states where the workers are being owed, I tell you it could lead to the collapse of the country. About 11 states cannot be in crisis and you expect the crime rate to go down. No! It will surely increase and that is why they need the Federal Government’s help.”

Speaking on the leadership crisis which is causing a serious turmoil at the National Assembly, Olalekan-Ojo blamed what he described as an undue intervention from the ruling All Progressives Congress for the crisis.

He said that the ruling party might contribute to the failure of the National Assembly.

He said, “The APC should leave the National Assembly alone. The party should know that APC senators are not there to enact law for the party but for the entire Nigeria.

“Their unwarranted intervention by the party in leadership crisis in the National Assembly is an act of criminality. There is no constitution anywhere in the world that says a political party must choose leaders for the Senate or House of Representatives.”

According to him, the unpaid salary issue is a national problem which must be prevented from escalating, otherwise it might consume the whole nation.
