The position became vacant following the expiration of the tenure of the former Chairman of the commission, Prof attahiru Jega.

Since Jega’ s departure in June, the aspirants have stepped up their campaigns to occupy the position.
Some of those being speculated to succeed Jega are the acting Chairman of the commission, Amina Zakari;, two former National Commissioners (Lai Olurode and Nuru Yakubu); the Director-General of INEC Electoral Institute, Prof. Abubakar Momoh; Festus Okoye ( a human rights activist); Mike Igini.
A retired Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Muhammadu Uwais, who was the chairman of an Electoral Reform Committee raised by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, has been suggested for the job, but there is a snag: his age.
President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to discuss his nominees for the position.
