The most potent way to curb corruption among the new generation is to revive and instill discipline among youths in the country.
President Muhammadu Buhari
To this end, President Muhammadu Buhari has been urged to set machinery in motion to fight social disorder, indiscipline and all forms of anarchy in the country as well as renewal of pursuit of a civil discipline that will respect the rights of Nigerians as well as demand action from them.
The call was made by the lawmaker representing Obokun State Constituency in the Osun State Honourable Olatunbosun Oyintiloye while speaking on the spate of moral decadence among the younger generation at a programme organised by New Era Youth Forum in Osogbo.
According to him, if the War Against Indiscipline (WAI) of the Buhari/Idiagbon regime of 1981 had been sustained by successive administration, the spate of indiscipline among the teeming population would have been successfully curtailed.
He said corruption that has pervade all sphere of lives in the country is a form of indiscipline that has become part of the social order in almost three decades, saying a subtle campaign against indiscipline would go a long way to curb the menace especially among teenagers
To actualize this agenda, Oyintiloye said the Federal Government should strengthen all enforcement institutions as well as set up a Discipline Corps especially among youths in order to restore sanity in the society.
“It is important for all of us to realise that our society is suffering from lack of discipline and this has eaten deep into all sectors. This is one of the primary problem facing Nigeria as a nation as most people do not see corruption as an social vices that most be corrected.
“The issue is that we must all agree that we have a issue with discipline among the population and I would be of the opinion that a civil discipline corps should be put in place to revive the culture of discipline among our teeming youth population”.
The lawmaker identified gaps in social settings which include high level of chaos on highways, market places and disorderliness in public places among others, saying, orderliness is the first law in heaven and indicator of civilization in any society
“No society can achieve any significant development if the people live without any form of discipline, I think Nigerians must come to term with the fact that development has its sacrifice, hence, we must all be ready to compromise our usual comfort zones and give up some bad habit in the interest of national development”.
Stressing that war should be waged against indiscipline to restore civility, Oyintiloye maintained that democratic settings places value on human dignity, hence youths should be empowered, trained and engaged to take a lead in this direction.
“It must be done with consciousness of human right, courtesy and community service. We must do it in a cultured way in line with African tradition”, he said.
“However, respect for human rights principles should be ingrained in the consciousness of the youths as well as all agencies of governments that interact with the public.
