Council Workers In Bauchi Protest Cut In Allowances

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Bauchi State have lamented the cut down of allowances of the workers in all the local government areas of the state. State Chairmen of the two unions, Comrade Hashimu Mohammed Gital of the NLC and Comrade Shehu Isa Jama’are of the NULGE, spoke on this at a news conference in Bauchi in Sunday. According to Isa, the action is unfair and that there was no justification that warrants the distortion of local government workers’ salaries since their counter parts at the state government level were not affected. He said local government workers want the government to pay them their three month salaries in full together with leave grants. On his part, the NLC chairman expressed concern that NULGE, Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) and medical and health workers in the 20 local government areas were affected with salary deductions. He appealed to the state government to look in to the matter and to provide solution in order to maintain industrial harmony. When contacted, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Local Government, Alhaji Hudu Yunusa, declined to make comment on the issue.
